Product Info

Product Description

If there's one fitting that seems to cause more confusion than any other in pneumatic drilling, it's the tail pipe. Not because it's complicated — it's literally a threaded nipple with a hose barb — but because nobody can agree on what to call it.
Conuto. Tail pipe. Nipple. Hose adapter. Stem coupling. Barb fitting. Depending on what country you're in and who trained you, you'll use a different word for the same thing.
The BDL133 is all of those things. It's a 3/4-inch tail pipe coupling that connects your air-leg rock drill's threaded air inlet to your air hose. One end has male G3/4 threads; the other end has a hose barb that your 3/4-inch air hose pushes onto. Simple, proven, essential.

The Fitting Your Drill Manufacturer Assumes You Already Have

Here's something interesting: most rock drill manuals don't list the tail pipe coupling in their spare parts catalog. Not because it doesn't matter, but because it's considered part of the "hose connection" — a generic component that the operator is expected to source separately.
The result? Operators buy the drill, get it to site, unbox it, and realize they don't have the fitting to connect their air hose. The drill's air inlet is a 3/4-inch female thread. Their hose has no matching connector. They need a BDL133 (or equivalent), and they need it now.
We've shipped BDL133s to customers who ordered them as an emergency — overnight express, urgent, please-hurry — because someone on site opened a crate of brand-new drills and found that the coupling situation hadn't been thought through. A $0.90 part, holding up a $15,000 drill.
Don't be that project.

Why 3/4 Inch Is the Sweet Spot for Air-Leg Drills

The 3/4-inch tail pipe matches the air inlet standard for the most widely used air-leg rock drills in the world: the YT29, YT28, YT27, and 7655. These drills consume 2.5–4.5 m³/min of compressed air at 0.4–0.63 MPa, and the 3/4-inch bore provides adequate flow without creating excessive restriction at the inlet.
The BDL133's hose barb is sized to accept standard 3/4-inch (19mm ID) air hose, secured with a clamp coupling (SL34) or standard worm-drive hose clamp. The G3/4 male thread matches the drill's inlet port and seals with PTFE tape.

Reliability Under Vibration

Air-leg rock drills operate at 30–37 Hz impact frequency. That vibration travels through the drill body, into the tail pipe, and down into the hose connection. Over weeks and months of operation, this vibration causes:
  • Thread seal degradation (micro-movement between mating threads)

  • Hose barb fatigue (micro-cracks at the base of the barb ridges)

  • Hose clamp loosening (the constant shaking slowly rotates the clamp on the hose)

The BDL133's brass construction absorbs vibration better than steel alternatives, which are more prone to fatigue cracking. Brass has a natural damping quality that makes it the preferred material for fittings in high-vibration pneumatic applications.
To maximize service life:
  • Check the barb-to-hose connection weekly for any signs of hose movement or clamp loosening

  • Inspect the thread seal monthly — if you hear hissing, reseal or replace

  • Replace the tail pipe at the first sign of cracking at the barb base

  • Don't use the tail pipe as a lifting handle or leverage point — it's not designed for bending loads

A Practical Ordering Guide

If you're equipping a new drilling project, here's what a typical connection kit for one air-leg rock drill (like the YT29) looks like:
ComponentCodeQty per DrillPurpose
Tail pipe couplingBDL1331Connects drill inlet to hose
Hose clamp (abrazadera)SL341Secures hose to tail pipe barb
Female thread couplingBDL1231 (spare)Backup for drill inlet
Male thread couplingBDL1131 (spare)Backup for manifold connection
PTFE tapeStandard1 rollThread sealing
This kit covers the full connection from drill to air supply, plus critical spares, for under $5 per drill. We recommend ordering at least 2× the kit quantity so you have one set on the drill and one set in the parts box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's the difference between BDL132 (1/2") and BDL133 (3/4")?

Size. The BDL132 is for equipment with G1/2 air inlets (smaller drills and breakers). The BDL133 is for G3/4 inlets (air-leg rock drills like YT29, YT28, etc.). Using the wrong size won't work — the threads won't match.

Q: My tail pipe is leaking at the thread even with Teflon tape. What's wrong?

Several possibilities: (1) the threads on either the tail pipe or the drill inlet are damaged/worn, (2) not enough Teflon tape (use 3 wraps minimum), (3) the tape was wrapped in the wrong direction (should be clockwise looking at the thread end), or (4) debris on the threads is preventing a clean seal. Clean everything, reapply tape, and try again. If it still leaks, inspect the threads for damage.

Q: How tight should the tail pipe be?

Hand-tight plus 1/4 to 1/2 turn with a wrench. Over-tightening can crack the brass or damage the drill's inlet threads. The seal comes from the Teflon tape filling the thread gaps, not from crushing force.

Q: Do I need a hose clamp on the barb end?

Yes. The barb provides grip, but compressed air at 0.5+ MPa will push the hose off the barb without a clamp. Use the SL34 abrazadera or a standard worm-drive clamp positioned behind the last barb ridge.
