Product Description

If you've ever stood at the mouth of a tunnel and watched a crew try to get a drill running, you know the feeling. The compressor is screaming, everyone's waiting, and the problem isn't the drill — it's a missing coupling. A two-dollar part is holding up a thousand-dollar shift.

That's exactly the situation the SL76 was designed to eliminate.

What Is the SL76?

The SL76 is a 2-inch air hose coupling — what a lot of operators in Latin America call an abrazadera — built to handle high-volume compressed air delivery between your air compressor and heavy pneumatic rock drills. It clamps securely around a 2-inch (50mm) air hose and creates an airtight seal that won't let go, even under continuous operation at 0.5–0.63 MPa.

This is the coupling you reach for when you're running large-scale pneumatic equipment — the kind of setup you'd see in open-pit mines, major quarry operations, or tunnel boring projects where downtime costs more than the equipment itself.

Why 2 Inches?

Here's something most equipment dealers won't tell you: hose size isn't optional. It's physics.

A jack hammer like the YT29 or 7655 runs on roughly 40–80 liters per second of compressed air at 0.4–0.63 MPa working pressure. Push that volume through a 1-inch line and you'll lose pressure at every fitting, every bend, every meter of hose. The drill loses impact energy. The operator works harder. Production drops.

A 2-inch coupling and matching hose eliminates that bottleneck. More air gets to the drill, the drill hits harder, and your crew finishes the shift on time instead of explaining why they didn't.

Typical applications for the SL76:

  • Open-pit mining operations using high-capacity compressors (20 m³/min and above)

  • Large-diameter tunnel drilling where multiple drills share a single air line

  • Quarry operations running YT28 or 7655 air-leg rock drills on long hose runs (50m+)

  • Any job site where air delivery distance reduces pressure — the larger diameter minimizes friction loss

Build Quality That Matches the Job

The SL76 is manufactured from brass, which isn't the cheapest option — it's the right one. Brass handles the corrosion that comes from humid compressed air, outdoor storage, and the general punishment that mine-site equipment takes. Stainless steel is available for particularly aggressive environments (salt air, chemical processing sites), but for most mining and quarry operations, brass gives you the best balance of durability, cost, and thread compatibility.

The clamp mechanism uses a band-style design that distributes pressure evenly around the hose circumference. Unlike push-fit couplings that can work loose under vibration, the SL76's banded grip stays locked even when the drill is hammering at 35+ Hz impact frequency — which, if you've ever held a jack hammer, you know generates some serious shaking.

Installation Tips

We've seen enough field failures to know that most coupling problems come down to installation, not the product itself. A few things worth knowing:

  1. Clean the hose end before clamping. Blow out any debris or dust from the inside of the hose. Compressed air carries a surprising amount of grit, and if it gets between the hose and the coupling, you'll have a slow leak from day one.

  2. Don't over-tighten. The bolt should be firm, not distorted. If you're stripping threads, you're going too far.

  3. Check the seal monthly. A simple soap-water bubble test takes 30 seconds and tells you immediately if you're losing air. Acceptable leakage rate: below 0.1% (per ISO 4413).

  4. Replace seals every 6 months. Rubber sealing components degrade with pressure cycling, temperature changes, and ozone exposure. It's a cheap preventative step that saves expensive downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will this fit my existing 2-inch air hose? Yes. The SL76 is designed to standard 2-inch (50mm) inner diameter air hoses, which is the most common large-diameter size used in mining and construction pneumatic systems worldwide. If your hose measures 2" ID, it will fit.

Q: Do I need Teflon tape or thread sealant? For the clamp bolt, a small amount of anti-seize compound helps prevent galling if you need to remove and reinstall frequently. Teflon tape is not required on the clamp itself since it uses compression against the hose rather than threaded sealing.

Q: How does this compare to a quick-connect fitting? Quick-connect fittings are great for applications where you're constantly coupling and uncoupling — rental yards, for example. But for fixed installations or setups that stay connected for weeks at a time, the abrazadera (band clamp) type is more secure, cheaper, and less prone to accidental disconnection under vibration.

Q: What's the difference between SL76 and SL40? Size. SL76 is for 2-inch hoses, SL40 is for 1-inch hoses. If you're running a single YT29 or similar drill, 1 inch is usually sufficient. If you're feeding multiple drills from one line or running long hose distances, go with the 2-inch SL76.

Q: Can I use this with an air-leg rock drill like the YT28 or 7655? Absolutely. The SL76 connects the compressor to your air hose — it doesn't attach directly to the drill. The drill itself connects to the hose via its own threaded inlet (typically G1/2 or G3/4), which is where our interno and externa couplings (BDL series) come in.
