Introduction to Rock Drills (Pneumatic Air Pick)

2026-03-24

A rock drill is a tool used for direct stone excavation. It drills blast holes into rock formations so explosives can be inserted to break the rock, enabling quarrying and other earthwork operations. Rock drills can also be used as breakers for demolishing hard materials such as concrete.

A typical setup has three main components:

  1. the drill unit,

  2. the lubricator, and

  3. the air leg.

Rock drills can be classified by power source:

  • Pneumatic type: Uses compressed air to drive a piston in a cylinder. The piston strikes the drill steel to break rock. This is the most widely used type.

  • Electric type: An electric motor drives a hammer through a crank-and-connecting-rod mechanism to strike the drill steel. A cuttings-removal system discharges rock debris.

  • Hydraulic type: Uses hydraulic energy, together with inert gas and an impact body, to strike the drill steel. During the return stroke, a rotation mechanism forces the drill steel to turn so the bit changes position and continues cutting.

  • Internal combustion type: Uses fuel combustion to drive a piston that repeatedly impacts and rotates the drill steel, while a flushing system removes rock cuttings to form blast holes.

The internal combustion rock drill does not require replacing internal head components during normal operation; the operator can start work by moving the control handle as required. It is easy to operate, saves time and labor, and offers fast drilling speed with high efficiency. It can drill vertically downward, horizontally, and upward at angles below 45°, with a maximum vertical-down hole depth of up to 6 meters. It can work in a wide range of environments, from mountainous to flat terrain, and from extreme heat around 40°C to severe cold around -40°C.

Common product models include:

  • Pneumatic rock drills: YT23 (7655), YT24, YT28, YTP26

  • Electric rock drill: YT23D

  • Internal combustion rock drill: YN27C

  • Hydraulic rock drill: YT28
